STATEMENT 　　Here and now 　　In the film Balkan Baroque, one has the impression that the character invents the past as she speaks, here and now. This past seems to have no reality outside the moment it is evoked with the force that is characteristic of film work. Here, in Balkan Baroque, it has become the present, the present of the film unwinding before the viewer's eyes. 　　What we see on the screen is in the process of happening-it is the very gesture that is given to us and not a report on it. The universe of the film is given in a perpetual present. In other words, this biography of Marina Abramovic, which implies a number of past things, is in process of unfolding before our eyes, here and now, as we watch Balkan Baroque. 'Elsewhere' and 'formerly' do not exist. There is no longer a true reality, inherent and external to the film, so there is no longer anything but the sole reality of the projected images. The film, the universe that it reveals, suffices by itself, at every instant, erasing itself as it goes along, within a loop that is literally never-ending. 　　We are therefore dealing with a subjective, mental unwinding. The work Balkan Baroque is not account of an exterior reality; it is its own reality. The only time to be considered for this biography is the projection time (63'). Balkan Baroque is pure fiction, an imaginary production in which Marina Abramovic plays different roles, including the role of the artist doing performances.

Featuring: Mo Zhong, Want Wen Guang, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Maoist dance troupes, Taoist temple music and tea-dance tango bands. 　　Description: In the early 1980's, China was just emerging from the repressive Cultural Revolution which very nearly stamped out much Chinese classical and folk music - three thousand year-old traditions. Cautiously, musicians, singers, composers and conductors were re-emerging, returning from exile and beginning to revive some of the suppressed music, all under the vigilant gaze of suspicious government officials. 　　Into this moment of regeneration came director Jeremy Marre on a quest to capture the true musical traditions of China. Constantly battling to avoid the dull 'official' musical ensembles he traveled to Shanghai, Beijing, and the Islamic, far northwestern region of Xinjian. 　　In Beijing, he was able to film Want Wen Guang, one of less than 100 Chinese who can still play the gu-qin, an ancient zither-like instrument, in a stirring, passionate performance. Later he encounters Mo Zhong, a Taoist priest, and temple drummer whose hands were broken during the Cultural Revolution in order to keep him from playing, as well as a young master of the pipa, a traditional lute, who managed to perform brilliantly despite conditions which keep him from practicing. 　　In the Islamic northwest, a very different China is encountered, a China where music and dance still flowers freely, as captured here in a wild wedding celebration. 'Cotton Mill Shanghai Blues' is a thought-provoking documentary of a dormant, ancient musical culture finally re-emerging. In addition to the performances noted above, this episode from the Beats of the Heart series also features acrobats and puppeteers, female ballad singers, Shanghai traditional opera and tea house music.

汐见（細川俊之 饰）是一家私人疗所的精神分析医生。一天，诊所里来了一位年轻美丽的女性患者麗子（黒沢のり子 饰）。自称看电视和听收音机的时候，对白和其它声音都能听见,唯独听不见伴奏音乐。去妇科医院查过后，又被告知并无大碍。经过初步诊断，汐见了解到世家出身的麗子，从女子大学毕业后，就在东京的贸易公司工作，现在的恋人是同事江上隆一（森次晃嗣 饰）。少女时代，麗子曾被父母定下的未婚夫俊二（三谷昇 饰）夺走童贞，她一直为无法向江上告白这段隐情而苦恼。治疗过程中，汐见发现麗子所谓的症状是个谎言，其实是想掩饰跟江上做爱时没有快感。于是，汐见把治疗改成了自由联想法，让她把心中浮现的一切都说出来－－儿时的麗子、蓝色的折纸变成了蓝天、剪刀划过天空、从黑色裂缝中跑出来的公牛、牛犄角转变为男根迎面扑来、正在刷剪子的麗子、剪刀不知不觉变得巨大成为麗子的双脚、麗子美丽的小姨、一袭黑衫的年轻男人偷偷潜入、互相纠缠的两个人... 　　汐见认为男人的剪刀是麗子的良心，女人的剪刀是麗子的欲望，她既爱男人又恨男人，因此汐见判定麗子小时候一定有过异样的性经历。丽子终于坦白了幼年时被哥哥爱抚的事，黑衫男人就是哥哥（高橋長英 饰），因与小姨的私情败露后离家出走。当初麗子与江上初次约会的时候，就是因为他的黑衬衫和黑裤子酷似哥哥才一见倾心。几天后，在看望因癌症而病危的俊二时，麗子将她的手贴在俊二的胸前，忽然露出恍惚的表情，大声喊着“能听见音乐了”。之后在海滩邂逅一位欲寻短见的性无能青年花井（松川勉 饰），又出现了类似的情形。为什么只有病人和性无能者才能让自己获得快感，麗子感到异常困惑。经过汐见的反复追问，麗子终于回忆起与哥哥交合的一幕... 　　听完告白的汐见对麗子说，治疗的方法只有一个：必须再一次和哥哥见面。在哥哥的房间里看到啼哭不止的婴儿后，目瞪口呆的麗子，眼泪夺眶而出。汐见理解了一切，麗子真正的欲望是生下哥哥的孩子，不感症就是在努力地保护子宫，所以只有病人和性无能者才是安全的。但是现在努力白费了，哥哥的孩子已经出生了。汐见温柔地对麗子说：“你的病治好了。”一周后，麗子给汐见发来了电报。
